High School Student SOAR

What a great year it has been so far! The student SOAR team has been staying busy every month planning and executing student-led activities. The school year begins with planning the entire Homecoming week, from dress-up days to class games, an activity night at Harvestville Farms, the parade, crowning of the Homecoming Queen and King at the big game, decorating for the dance, and the dance itself! Of course, the leadership duties do not stop there.

Each month, the SOAR team meets at least once (usually twice) to discuss the upcoming events that they will be leading. The team also spends time learning at their 2-3 group retreats to refresh themselves on the 7 Habits, as well as take time to build camaraderie and community. The SOAR team plans activities based on the needs they perceive at the high school and what they feel the student body would be interested in.

The lessons planned on student-led Fun Days are based on data from student surveys to help improve school culture, student-to-student relationships, and student-to-teacher relationships. The activities this school year have included delivering treats to all first responders in the area, Holiday Fun Day in December, two blood drives, student-led lessons, a dodgeball tournament, Penny Wars, posting kindness notes on all student’s lockers, Red Ribbon Week Activities, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, shamrock shakes, and a Riverside Nutrition pop-up! The SOAR team is now planning end-of-year activities, including Teacher Appreciation Week and the last whole-school Fun Day! Thanks to this amazing team, the 2022-23 school year has been filled with leadership, meetings, learning, and—as always—fun.
