Reading and Writing During Summer Break!

As the end of the school year approaches, we would like to take a moment to reflect on all the great things our students have accomplished. Throughout this year, students have learned many new literacy strategies that have helped them become stronger readers and writers. Using these strategies, students can confidently and independently attempt reading new words. They read smoothly, expressively, and understand the author’s message. Students enjoy writing about the stories they read, as well as writing their own stories. Most importantly, they have discovered the joy of books and are excited to read and write!

Parents play an important role in their child’s literacy development during summer break. Exploring the world of literature provides fun and rewarding experiences for children and parents, and reading a few books each week will provide your child with an opportunity to enjoy literature and work on their literacy skills. A few helpful ideas to encourage summer reading and promote continued growth during summer break include:

  • Visiting your local library and joining a summer reading program

  • Choosing “good fit” books so that reading is fun and not frustrating

  • Sharing your favorite part of the book

  • Writing and illustrating your own books

  • Writing letters to friends or family members

  • Playing Tic-Tac-Toe with high frequency words using sidewalk chalk

  • Writing in a journal about your summer adventures

We hope you can try out these fun strategies to continue growing your child’s literacy skills this summer. We look forward to welcoming our students back this fall and seeing how much they have grown!
