Two exceptional alumni and one historic team whose impact on Hawk athletics continues to inspire will be inducted into the Central Lee Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025.
Paul Bunnell Jr., Class of 1985, was one of Central Lee’s most accomplished distance runners. He was a three-time state qualifier in cross country, winning the 1984 state championship. In track, he earned multiple all-conference and all-state honors, setting school records in the 1600 meter, 3200 meter, and mile medley relay—records that still stand today. At Luther College, Bunnell helped lead the 1985 cross country team to an NCAA Division III national championship and earned all-American honors in track.
Ben Vogel, Class of 2003, was a four-sport standout who earned varsity letters in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. He scored 1,177 points in basketball, earned second team all-state honors, and helped lead Central Lee to three conference titles. On the track, he was a three-time state qualifier and a member of the 2003 Class 3A state champion 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, both of which set school records. Vogel went on to play basketball at Wartburg College, where he was a four-year letterwinner and team captain.
The 2000 Girls Basketball Team, known affectionately as "The Lon & Don Show," made history with a 25-3 season that culminated in a trip to the Class 3A state championship game. The Lady Hawks won the Super Conference tournament, sectional, and regional titles, and earned praise for their sportsmanship and team spirit. Their semifinal win over top-ranked Union of La Porte City remains one of the program’s most memorable moments.
“These inductees represent the very best of Central Lee—excellence, perseverance, and community pride,” said Dr. Andy Crozier, Superintendent. “We are proud to honor their achievements and to share their stories with our students, staff, and alumni.”
The Hall of Fame Ceremony to honor the 2024 and 2025 inductees will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Central Lee High School. The event is open to the public.
