The Central Lee Building Trades Department is off and running! It’s hard to believe we are only a few weeks away from being halfway done.
Our carpentry I students have been working their way through construction math basics and shop and tool safety. They are currently working on their doghouse project, where groups of three or four students construct a doghouse that will be for sale once completed.
Carpentry II students are working on wall framing principles and are currently bidding a framing package for a house from a set of blueprints. After that, they will move into roof framing, and will finish that unit by cutting and installing rafters on a small roof.
Carpentry III is our jobsite class, and students are finishing up the siding on the new district office we constructed last year. After this is done, we’ll move on to a few small projects in the community, along with some here on campus. (We did break away a couple weeks ago and poured a little concrete!)
Our Walls and Ceilings course is a drywall hanging and finishing class designed to give the students hands-on experience in that trade. We have three small rooms constructed in the shop, and students work in groups to hang and finish each one. Currently, students are into the second coating of all joints, and will progress through to a level five finish. They’ll learn how to texture and prime, as well.
