Outdoor Education Day with Lee County Conservation

On October 10, 5th grade students took a trip to Pollmiller Park for their annual Outdoor Education Day. Students participated in several activities, including fishing, hiking, fire starting, relay races, and The Amazing Race: Outdoor Education Edition.

Conservationist Clay led each class on a nature hike through the park’s trails, where students learned about native Iowa plants and animals. Students learned fire-starting techniques from Lia and had the opportunity to practice several methods before successfully starting a fire.

One highlight of the day was fishing at Pollimiller Lake. A great group of retired fishermen volunteered their time to assist our students, helping with baiting hooks, removing fish, and untangling lines. Students caught many fish throughout the day. For some, it was their first fishing experience, and others were seasoned pros.

During The Amazing Race: Outdoor Education Edition, students worked in teams to complete a series of challenges. As they finished each task, teams earned clues that helped them solve a final riddle. Many teams completed all of the challenges.

We enjoyed beautiful weather and created many memorable moments. Here are a few photos from our day:
