Central Lee Honors Staff with Annual Awards
District names Teacher of the Year, Employees of the Year and Newcomer of the Year
DONNELLSON, IOWA — The Central Lee Community School District recognized several of its teachers and staff members through its 2020-21 Annual Awards.
Earning Teacher of the Year honors was Kathryn Sellens, who teaches fifth grade at Central Lee Elementary School. She is known for her commitment to continuously improving to enhance student learning. She has been a leader in working with her fellow teachers and staff to support student achievement, and has also mentored and collaborated with many of her colleagues. Sellens will retire at the end of the school year.
Additionally, Amanda Schiller was named Newcomer of the Year. She began serving as part of the middle school science team this school year, and has already built strong relationships with her colleagues, students and families. She has taken on leadership roles and actively participated in school-related activities, such as the Leader in Me program, school dress-up days and weekly videos.
The district also recognized four Employees of the Year: Lora Azinger, Bob Burgess, Deb Hunold and Brian Wells.
Azinger has served in the district office for many years, working on a wide range of functions across Central Lee. She is known for doing everything at an extremely high level while maintaining a pleasant and polite demeanor at all times. Parents and community members have come to appreciate the level of respect and compassion she exhibits on a daily basis. Azinger is also retiring at the end of the school year.
Burgess serves as a full-time substitute bus driver for Central Lee. He has brought a positive attitude, commitment to safety and a love of students to the transportation team. Burgess is willing to help out in any capacity needed, and does it with a smile. He has been part of the Central Lee family in different capacities over the years, but this role is definitely a great fit for him.
Finally, Hunold and Wells were honored for their exceptional work serving as POD leaders in both Montrose and Donnellson during the COVID-19 pandemic. They played a variety of roles, including many outside of their training and experience. Through it all, they focused on providing a safe and healthy learning environment for students. As they took on these new roles, Hunold and Wells got to know and formed strong relationships with teachers, students, parents and community members.
“While we are always thrilled to recognize our teachers and staff members, this year feels extra special because of all we have collectively accomplished and overcome during the pandemic,” said Dr. Andy Crozier, Superintendent. “I want to offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to each of our honorees. It was due to your tremendous work—and the work of all our staff members—that we were able to provide engaging learning opportunities during an incredibly challenging time. You all demonstrate exactly what we mean when we say we are ‘Proud to Be Central Lee.’”
