Elementary - K-6th Grades

Kindergarten through sixth grade physical education classes have participated in numerous units since the beginning of the year. Students have learned sports like football, volleyball, basketball, hockey, badminton, cricket, curling, handball, and golf. Sixth graders have played recreational games like table tennis, pickleball, shuffleboard, bowling, and bags. We have spent time developing our bodies by talking about nutrition and enjoying fitness-oriented lessons, while working on our speed and balance in tag-and-chase games.

Following spring break, 4th-6th grades will have the opportunity to roller skate during P.E. classes. Soon, students will take part in gymnastics, softball/kickball, and soccer activities to finish out our year.

Middle School - 7-8th Grades

Our 7th and 8th grade physical education classes have been busy since we came back from the holiday break! We spent most of January working on volleyball skills and techniques, and then finished the unit with a round-robin tournament. The students were placed on teams and played all the other teams during the tournament. Students also were in charge of keeping score and line judging when their team was not playing on the courts. The volleyball unit was a great success.

We recently finished up our recreational games, including bowling, bag toss, table tennis, shuffleboard, and pickleball. Students picked their own groups when playing the games. Everyone got to play each game at least once—and some even more. Students were taught how to keep the proper bowling score and used their math skills to add up each frame.

Our next unit will be roller-skating, which we will start when we come back from spring break. We are very excited to be able to bring this unit back to our school. We had to postpone the unit for the past couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Things are going well and students are learning new ways to stay healthy and fit during the winter months.

High School

In high school physical education, we are currently doing a recreational games unit. Students are playing various games, such as bag toss, pickle ball, ladder golf, ping pong and badminton. This will teach them the different rules of the games, as well as allow them to stay active for the rest of their lives.

We just finished an archery unit and will be focusing much of the rest of the year on skating, tchouk ball, soccer, and softball.

Students taking part in skating will need to pay $8 to skate four times. We will be doing inline skating at the high school. Those who opt not to skate will engage with workout videos or walking, depending on the weather.

Athletic Conditioning

In Athletic Conditioning, our students are performing a wide range of exercises to build strength, endurance, power, speed, and agility. Overall, this class can help students improve their knowledge of weightlifting, athletic performance, and general health. Students chart their lifts throughout the school year to track the progress they have made.

This past month, Jon Minnis, Director of Strength and Conditioning at Western Illinois University, provided a clinic called “Maximizing Athletic Performance for Young Athletes” at Central Lee. During this clinic, he highlighted the importance of technique, sleep, and nutrition.
