As the end of the school year draws near, you might be considering how to encourage your child to participate in reading activities to maintain the progress they’ve made this school year. During the summer months, it’s important to focus on fostering a love for reading and incorporating fun, engaging activities.

Our students are fortunate to live near several community libraries that provide enriching activities for them during the summer. The Donnellson, West Point, Fort Madison, and Keokuk libraries provide a full summer schedule for students of all ages, including book clubs, discussions, and science and art events. Stay updated on their schedules by visiting your local library in person or online.

Utilizing technology is another great way to keep your child engaged in reading and writing activities over the summer. Here are some recommended websites:

Additionally, remember that nothing is more beneficial to a child than spending time listening to them read. Create memorable moments around books by engaging in meaningful discussions about what they are reading or making predictions together about what is going to happen next in the story. Encourage your child to explore experiences beyond the pages of a book; for example, if you’re reading about a park or going on a hike, consider visiting a nearby park or exploring your neighborhood together. And don't forget, your child will still enjoy listening to you read aloud!

By participating in and creating enjoyable reading and writing activities together, your child will return to school in the fall prepared to continue their learning journey!
