Butterfly

Eggs, Larva, Pupa, and Butterflies — Oh My!

Our 3rd graders are excited to have the opportunity to study the life cycle of a monarch butterfly this month! Thanks to a grant from Iowa State University, every 3rd grade student is able to rear their own monarch from an egg to an adult monarch butterfly. Central Lee is just one of 50 districts participating in the Monarch Eggs Project. The project includes over 270 classrooms, and likely over 6000 students.

3rd grade students have been responsible for transferring their caterpillars to new homes, feeding, and daily cleaning. We will tag our butterflies once they emerge from their chrysalises and track them, as this generation of monarchs will be traveling to Mexico in the winter. This is such a unique experience for our school to be involved in, and it’s just another reason to be proud of Central Lee!

Looking forward to a great year,
